This capstone research project is an in-depth exploration of how the visual characteristics of letterforms influence the way we read, interpret, and emotionally respond to text. Typography is more than just a functional tool for communication, it carries history, culture, and subconscious meaning within its shapes. This project examines the evolution of typographic styles, their psychological and emotional impact, and how specific design choices affect readability and perception.

By analyzing the structure of letterforms, such as weight, contrast, curvature, and spacing, this research project seeks to uncover the connotations embedded within type. Why do sharp, angular letterforms convey authority or aggression, while rounded, organic shapes feel soft and inviting? How do brands, designers, and digital interfaces use type strategically to influence audiences? Through historical research and experimental visual design, this project highlights typography’s role in shaping visual communication. Three main categories were then represented by abstract, fluid imagery in order to visually represent the emotions and feelings evoked from various different elements within typography and found in individual letterforms.
